Threefer: Ferry, Space Shuttle and Battleship

The Metro Moms love holiday weekends. With everyone at the beach and three sunny days ahead, it’s like Manhattan is a private playground for our families.

A couple of months ago, the Metro Kids watched from New Jersey playgrounds and schoolyards as the space shuttle Enterprise flew overhead en route to its final destination – the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. The Metro Kids were thrilled at the prospect of getting to see the space shuttle up close in person.

The New York Waterway ferry to 39th Street runs every twenty minutes on weekends and lands you steps away from the Intrepid entrance on 46th Street. With a handy coupon getting you 20% off museum admission, no parking hassle and kids five and under riding free, the ferry is the best deal around this holiday weekend.

From the flight deck to the space pavilion, to spending the day as a crew member manning a battle helicopter and crashing out in a bunk, a visit to the Intrepid is the perfect way to end the summer before sending the kids back to sit in school all day.

Finish up with a tutorial on how to build your own fighter jet and then head back to the ferry for a quick ride home with exhausted and happy kids. What better way to work off weekend energy than running the kids all over a flight deck?
